Do I have to have prior riding experience to join the team?
No! We welcome riders of all levels to join the team, whether you have never been on a horse or have been riding since before you could walk.
How do I join the team?
If you're interested in joining the team, feel free to contact our coach, Leslie Terry ([email protected]), or our team captain ([email protected]). As a current student you can also reach the team at Ave's annual activities fair held in the fall semester. We look forward to hearing from you!
What are team member requirements?
Team members are required to ride in a weekly lesson with one of the coaches, commit to compete for at least one semester, attend team meetings, and participate in fundraisers.
Do I have to tryout for the team?
Tryouts are required for anyone who wants to join the team. However, riders are not assessed solely on riding ability, but also on commitment and willingness to learn and grow. We need riders of all levels--beginner, advanced, and everywhere in between--in order to have a complete team. Tryouts take place during a private lesson at the beginning of the semester.
How does practice work?
Members of the team have individual lessons with our coaches at Cornerstone Farm at least once a week. Lessons are taken on the horses boarded at Cornerstone, so it is not necessary to own your own horse. In fact, most members of our team do not. Transportation to the barn is the responsibility of the team member; however, the team has a very reliable carpool system set up. Cornerstone Farm is located roughly 25 minutes from Ave Maria at 1761 Rock Rd, Naples FL 34109.
How much does it cost?
For lesson fees and average competition costs, please contact Leslie Terry at [email protected]
What if I want to be involved, but don't want to ride competitively?
Currently AMU only has a competitive team, but we are hoping to launch an equestrian club in Fall 2024 for any students who want to be involved in equestrian activities but don't want to compete. If you are interested in being a part of this, please email us!
How do I schedule a barn tour?
Anyone is more than welcome to schedule a barn visit to see our practice facility. Touring the barn will give you a chance to meet some of our lesson horses and learn more about the team.
